Until assembled, the members of a timber frame can be much longer than the footprint of the finished built environment. For instance, tenons at the top and bottom of a post can add 8” or more to the length of the timber. This timber frame was joined and built in an existing, enclosed space. The frame was engineered and installed starting at the roof peak, then constructed downward to the sills on the floor. As. a music studio this was a complicated build. Here is a Pent Roof. We’ve placed this on a grand home with a beautiful limestone facade. The structure was placed on solid blocking let into the framing behind the facade and held proud to the outside face of the stone. Stainless steel connections were used to attach the ledger and housing posts to the home. The arched struts are let into the housing posts and rafters are let into the ledger. 1-1/2” decking flies over the whole configuration. Near the Chancellorsville Battlefield in Virginia there is a 200 year old cabin. It’s existed through many historic moments in our Nation’s legacy. Reverence for this home was paramount to us during this repair. The north face sill and various logs outlived their ability to hold the structure. We strapped the wall above the repair zone on the interior and exterior of the house. From the interior we carefully elevated the cabin with hydraulic jacks just enough to replace those sections. New dovetail corner joints on new white oak, hand hewn beams created a perfect fix. Another 200 years? I hope we’ll have stewards attending to our historic legacy. David is shaping a housing for rafters at the top of a shed roof on a new porch. He is removing the material at the bottom or “stop” of the housing. Then he kerfs the remainder of the material and pares the mortise for an exact fit. The same family has lived here since 1730. After 9 generations they have begun to restore all the historic structures on their farm. We began with the chicken coop. Tree roots and frost moved the cabin off the foundation and it was beginning to collapse. Digging it out, we found all the foundation stones and the stones used for chinking the walls. Raising it out of the ground enabled us to replace rotten sill logs using duplicated saddled notches on the corners. Then the foundation was rebuilt up to the new sill logs. We chinked and daubed the walls using traditional, self healing, hydraulic lime putty. We have repaired the rotten rafters with half lapped, under-squinted chestnut replacements and all joints were pegged into place. There are many other historic structures on this property and we will be working here for many years to come.

Thomas Point Lighthouse work in progress. We have cut out the failing members and have sawn out and mortised the new outboard beam. We boated the 22 footer and joists out to the lighthouse. Getting the material off the boat and onto our work platform was interesting because the bay was churning. We have fitted the beam onto the joist tusk tenons. All the layouts were perfect. The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Historic Registry. When built in 1877 timber framing was waning as a building technique in North America. We have been asked to repair the last vestiges of timber framing on this wonderful structure.
